A Community Effort

Kentwood’s motto is one that I wholeheartedly believe in, “A Community Effort.” Home to more than 50,000 people, I’ve enjoyed living, working, and getting to know the residents and businesses of West Michigan for over 50 years.

From attending college at Calvin College to spending the last four decades teaching students at Davenport University, I’m passionate about developing talent, promoting diversity, and improving the community around me.

It would be my honor to continue serving you as Kentwood City Commissioner for Ward 2 and, together, I truly believe we can build a future that we all can be proud of.

Top Priorities

Public Safety

Ron has shown strong support for the City of Kentwood Police and Fire Departments. Recent surveys show that over 92% of Kentwood residents responded positively to those who interacted with Kentwood Police Department.

Ron currently serves on two committees with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. One is called the Homeland Security Local Planning Team. The other is the Local Emergency Planning Committee. It has a large focus on emergency planning for chemical and other hazardous material accidents. During his years of teaching Disaster Recovery classes at Davenport University, Ron also was an Executive Board member of Michigan InfraGard, which is an FBI sponsored organization that collaborates with local hospitals and businesses, security professionals, law enforcement and other agencies to protect our nation’s infrastructure.

Parks and Recreation

Whether it’s participating in Kentwood 5k races or serving seniors at a Holiday Brunch, Ron has been an active participant in our Parks and Recreation programs. Ron will always work hard to make sure that our parks and trails are well-funded and kept in top condition for our residents to relax and have fun. Kentwood offers so many activities for our family and friends to enjoy. Ron was an early participant in the initial planning process for Covenant Park which is currently being designed for future enjoyment.

Financial Positioning

The City of Kentwood is in a solid financial position. Through careful planning and actions, the City of Kentwood receives solid financial ratings and includes a fully-funded pension program for City employees. Ron wants to make sure that the City stays on a strong financial path and he is committed to helping the City maintain its strong base.

As a former Certified Fraud Examiner, Ron can help ensure that the finances of the City of Kentwood are secure and are being spent in a reasonable and responsible manner.

Prepare for Future Technology

The pace of technological change is increasing. The City of Kentwood must be prepared for the many changes that are occurring. Ron Draayer spent his entire working career teaching in the field of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at Davenport University in Grand Rapids. Ron’s experience with changing technology can be a real benefit as Kentwood prepares for the future.

The electric future is rapidly approaching. City leaders should prepare Kentwood facilities to be electric-friendly for our residents who visit our events and buildings. The City must also prepare for the coming changes in electric vehicles for city public work’s staff.
